When it comes to tough local cars you would be hard-pressed to find an enthusiasts who doesn't know about this car...Phill Kerjean's bad-arse blown VK Wagon 'TUFFST' is one of the Illawarra's hero cars having competed quite successfully at the majority this countries major burnout comps for the past 12 years.
Starting off as Phill's daily driver some 20 years ago, the wagon has been through many rebuilds over the years, going from weekend warrior status up until 2003 when the road rego was ditched and it then became a dedicated competition tyre-shredding machine.
Undoubtedly the car in its latest guise as you see here is a result of its most amazing transformation yet, thanks to a hot new paint job by the guys at Exclusive Customs, tricked-out interior by Trims By Bec, complete with one serious sound system and a new set of billet rollers.
The new look, combined this with the cars proven driveline has seen Phil's wagon step up the the next level, the cars finish rivaling that of many award winning show cars. Just check out the awesome air brush detail featuring a dedication to some of the countries iconic Tuff Street cars.
Doing all the talking when the go-pedal is mashed to the floor is a 377-cube small block put together by Sam at Westend Performance, topped with a 8/71 blower.
The dry-sumped, methanol slurping Chev pushes a paddock of ponies through a Al's Race Gides 2-speed and nine inch diff where the 3.5 gear set see the rear hoops reach warp speeds in no time and producing plumes of tyre smoke that promptly block out the sun.
Inside the cabin is a sight many would not associate with a dedicated burnout car... Several cows worth of leather has been thrown about the wagon's interior, stitched up with style and precision by the very talented local Bec at Trims By Bec.
You can bet when Phil's strapped into the harness and tipping the car in at crazy speed he's admiring the handy work on the custom dash by Daniel at Obsessed With Sound whilst keeping an eye on engine vitals on the Racepack.
Then, when it's all done and dusted, not only does the new trim look amazing it's also nice and easy to clean after a long hard day of destroying tyres.
But it doesn't stop there though...Check out the insane sound system courtesy of Obsessed With Sound!! While not much use when fanging around the pad, Phil tells us it's a god send when hanging around the pits...
Unveiled at this years Summernats the car drew crowds of onlookers in the show pavilion but what they really wanted to see was the car out on the pad where it belongs, tearing up tyres...
Unfortunately Phil's big moment in the Burnout masters was cut short this year due to an uncharacteristic, yet spectacular fire under the cars rear end.
Back at the home pad at Sydney Dragway though the car performed flawlessly, putting on a killer show at the Australia Day meet. Check out a video of Phil's efforts here thanks to the guys at Fast performance Videos
After a whirlwind four month rebuild, Phil and his machine are back doing what they love best, ripping it up on the pad. When we asked Phil what was next on the cards for TUFFST, his reply...
