When it comes to modifying a car to increase performance, people often focus purely on the engine side of things, trying to squeeze as much horsepower as possible out of their chosen combo. There is another area of vehicle modification though which can sometimes be just as effective at increasing performance and often much easier on the hip pocket.
We're talking weight reduction and the team at Profab Motorsports Fabrication have developed a collection of Light Weight Tube Frame Front Clips that not only help you shed serious weight from your car quickly and easily but also increase front-end suspension adjustability for added safety and stability at high speeds.
The latest recipient of one of these killer setups is Jason Barnett's LC Torana from Melbourne. The crudely-modified factory crossmember and brake setup removed from the car is as chunky as they come, carrying some serious beef and offering little to no adjustability at all.
The replacement Profab Light Weight Tube Frame Front Clip, seen above in the initial setup stage is a complete bolt-in setup, effectively replacing the Torana's entire front end including the crossmember, steering, suspension arms, shocks, hubs and brakes.
Fabricated completely in-house at Profab's Fairy Meadow workshop, the custom chromolly tube front clip converts the cars front suspension from double wishbone to a McPherson strut type setup. All whilst still bolting up to the factory mounting points on the chassis rails; no modifications required.
This conversion is not only kept very compact and neat, it has also allowed for vastly increased adjustment points for camber, caster and toe which we'll get into a bit later.
Setup with your choice of either single or double adjustable Strange shocks offering driver/tuners the ability to set compression and rebound whilst also matching up with their chosen spring rates from the widely-used Hypercoil range.
Bolted up into the car you will also notice the lack of a horizontal crossmember which allows for the engine to be mounted lower in the chassis. The lack of a traditional-style crossmember also gives unobstructed access to the sump for fitment and removal as well as providing more room for custom header and turbo manifold systems.
Back to the increased adjustable the Profab kit offers, the most noticable difference is the increased caster that it able to be set. The factory setup which Joe tells us gives you a whole one degree of adjustment if you're lucky is pretty much useless compared to the 10 degrees offered by this kit.
Combine this with the vastly increased camber adjustablility and you've got the ability to set the car up to be much more stable and safer at high speeds. Add to that the light weight Strange brake setup and your miles ahead from where you started.
Built to utilise a standard factory-style steering rack as used in this application or with the option to use an aftermarket light weight rack, their is options to suit your budget whilst still using quality components.
New brake lines are also included in the kit, both hard lines and flexible braided lines are used throughout finishing the kit off nicely.
So now that you know all about the kit and what's included we guess it's time to get to the big question, what sort of weight saving are we talking about?? How's a saving of 100-150lbs (45-68kg) over a factory setup sound...? That's some serious weight reduction no matter which way you look at it, enough to give your car a nice boost in performance without even turning a spanner on your engine.
Profab keep Light Weight Tube Frame Front Clips to suit TC/TD Cortinas, LH/LX and LJ/LC & UC Toranas on the shelf but have also made custom kits to suit VZ Monaro, Commodores and Ford Capri. Suitable for street and race applications the kits are Mod Street, Pro Street, X275 & Outlaw Radial legal.
